SPECIAL GUEST: BRETT HILL

7 AM CST

Approximately 1 month after the tragic events of 9/11, Brett Hill (a South Pasadena Firefighter/Paramedic) met with a neighboring brett.pngLAFD friend who had just returned from working alongside FDNY firefighters at Ground Zero. Hill asked his friend what moved him the most during his deployment in lower Manhattan. His friend replied, "As we were getting ready to leave we were shaking the hands of the FDNY Firefighters we had worked with for 2 weeks--one firefighter grabbed my hand tightly--looked me straight in the eyes and said--PLEASE DON'T FORGET US." Those 4 words led Hill to begin a project that would work to get a 9/11 Tribute Patch on the uniformed sleeves of all firefighters across the country to help honor and remember the heroes of 9/11. Tune in as we broadcast LIVE from the Bensenville Public Library on September 11th as we visit with Brett Hill and look forward into the future of the 9-11 Patch Project.

When It Is No Longer News.

August 17, 2011

What happens in a community when the disaster that has brought loss and wreckage is no longer in the news? When the responders leave, the disaster is still there! Who helps? How hard is it to walk in the aftermath when you're no longer the top story? What can we do to revisit and assist the City of Joplin?  We'll be going LIVE TO JOPLIN with C4LDRT Team Leader Brent Daugherty of 3 Nails.

The Mental Aftermath Of Disaster.

August 22, 2011

In the wake of a disaster, especially terrorism, up to 90% of those exposed may suffer psychological distress or psychological crisis.  Almost 50% exposed may suffer significant clinical impairment such as Depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  With percentages this high it is very important that we understand the needs of first responders.  With disasters at an all time high this year, and the number of response agencies overwhelmed, what should we be looking at?

We'll be interviewing Courtney Feuquay, a specialist in post-disaster counseling.

Who Let The Dogs Out?.

National Preparedness Month.

September 5, 2011

eric_brown.jpgThis night we'll be talking about National Preparedness Month! The month of September is supposed to be that month we all get better prepared. Why is it that less than 50% of Americans are making disaster plans? How do we integrate the message into our everyday lives? What can we do with our family? What measures can a business take? What are we supposed to be preparing FOR?  This show will cover it all!

We are going to talk to one group doing all it can to make sure that National Preparedness Month stays alive all year with some MAJOR campaigns and effort.  We'll be visiting with Eric Brown, President and presiding Chairman of The Homeland Security Foundation of America.  The HSFA is a non-profit agency established to advance homeland security while preserving civil liberties through life-saving public safety, energy security and health and human services programs.

9-11. 10 Years Later.

September 19, 2011

Just back from the Chasing4Life Disaster Response Team's memorial trip to Joplin, we'll be taking a look back at 9-11 and how the terrorist attacks changed the way America reacts to threats. We'll be recognizing the men and women throughout our country that serve and have served to protect our way of life.

eric.jpgOur special guest will be patriotic sing/songwriter Eric Horner! After the attacks on 9-11, Eric recorded his hit "We Will Stand" with just his vocal and guitar in his production studio, and took it to WSM Radio in Nashville. That's all it took.  Within two weeks, "We Will Stand" was being played on every reporting country station in the country.  His website was over run with requests for the song which led Eric to donate the proceeds of the single to the Staten Island Victim's Relief Fund in NY.

Eric also wrote and recorded the Chasing4Life theme song "They Are Americans" featured on our website.  The song has been used to raise funds for the Chasing4Life Disaster Response Team.

Selling Preparedness

September 26, 2011

We'll be live with Bill and Janet Liebsch, authors of "It's A Disaster...and what are you gonna do about it?".  We'll be talking about what it takes to sell disaster preparedness in a country where we spend more on coffee in a year than we spend on disaster preparedness education.  How do you do it? How do you convince the public that they are all stakeholders?  What is the right approach?

Severe Weather with the Weather Dude

October 10, 2011

Just a week after the Rocket City Weather Fest in Huntsville, Alabama, we'll be spending the night with Nick Walker from The Weather Channel!  We'll be discussing this year's phenomenal weather events, but we'll hear from Nick what it has been like to be the forecaster and reporter in the midst of it all.  We'll find out just what was happening this year at the festival in Huntsville and we'll even take a peek at the festival in Birmingham coming up.

Wait, there's more... we're going to introduce you to WHY Nick is known as the weather dude!  We're going to talk about Nick's "weather music" and his career OUTSIDE of the television world.

When meteorologist Nick Walker from The Weather Channel talks to his national audience about weather, it's not just a scripted message. "I want my viewers to develop a fascination for weather, understand it, and respect its power," he says. And I want to do it in a way that's memorable."

His tactic? On camera he uses graphics, maps, and knowledgeable explanations. Off-camera, he sings. Known as "The Weather Dude" to thousands of kids and families throughout the country, Nick uses his vocal, instrumental and songwriting talents to drive home his meteorological message. From classrooms to science festivals and community events, Nick performs his catchy weather songs to teach the basics of weather, and to stress the importance of severe weather preparedness.

Tides-of-Hope? Walmart? Home Depot? We'll be speaking with an executive from ServiceMaster Corporation to find out just how disaster response has grown their company, how they plan for major disasters and how they try to educate their customers.

When the kids become the teachers

choosing_items_for_an_emergency_kit.jpgNovember 28, 2011

Several months ago, we presented a program on Home Disaster Kits to a large group of Girl Scouts.  What happened AFTER that night is where the story began...  a few of those girls went home and created home disaster kits for their families, but it did not stop there. These young ladies created a disaster kit program and became the educators, teaching their peers about disaster preparedness.  In this episode, we'll challenge our adult listeners as we interview these young leaders.

Sick and Tired

December 5, 2011

flu_3.jpg

flu_4.jpegA new variant of a flu virus that circulates in pigs has been jumping occasionally into people, providing a surprisingly early opportunity for public health officials to test out some of the lessons learned from the 2009 H1N1 Pandemic. We'll be joined by Chasing4Life's Thresea Gratton to find out just what we're looking at!

Theresa Gratton has over 18 years experience as a registered nurse; 8 years in critical care and 11 years as an Infection Preventionist.  Her career is grounded in evidenced based, data driven recommendations to increase safety and improve outcome.  She is passionate about sharing her infection prevention knowledge, strategies and process development with all levels of healthcare.

Is America ready for another pandemic or have they grown tired of the messages?

Social Media In Emergency Management

To teach them before it is too late

December 19, 2011

While emergency management agencies have many dilemmas facing them in a world wrought with disaster, the most daunting could be how to prepare the public BEFORE the disaster strikes. Disaster preparedness events are the name of the game here at Chasing4Life, but to the community that is trying to break the ice, where do you start?

On this show we will be taking a look at the step by step process of how one county made the effort to reach their population from the youngest to the oldest and how their efforts paid off.

We will be interviewing Chanay Ray, Administrative Assistant from the  Douglas County IL  Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and Coroner’s  Office.

Douglas County has a lot of threats lurking behind the scenes so preparedness education was a high priority, but how to do it? Could it be done without disrupting all of the other projects in the County?

Is it really worth investing in preparedness events?

A look at Mayan Prophecy and the end of time in America

December 26, 2011

There's so much hype about the Mayan calendar, and you're going to hear much more before the new year is through. Most don't take it seriously, and already, the threat of the "Mayan calandar doom" is being shrugged off like a Y2K leftover molding in the veggie drawer of the world's fridge...but what if we misunderstood?  What if they were right?  According to the experts, the Mayan Calandar comes to an end in 2012.  This means the end of time, but does it mean the end of life? Don't confuse the two!  In this episode, Chasing4Life founder Eddy Weiss will look at the possibility of "the end of time" and what that might actually mean. Could it be that by the end of the new year America is forced to live in a different "time"? How prepared will YOU be if the Mayans were just misunderstood?

Lessons Learned in 2011...

January 2, 2012

Do you have a preparedness resolution? It's time to look back at 2011 and learn from our experiences. What resolutions could we make? Which ones should be our priority?  What happened in 2011 thatwe should be learning from? Do we have the power to make 2012 a different year? A safer one? Is it REALLY in our power to create "Stronger Community"?

Under The Big Cloud

January 16, 2012

James Buffin's film "Under The Big Cloud" is not your everyday project. A "poetic odyssey", this is a tale of nature's fury and man's strength. But most of all perhaps, it is about grief, loss, and how these shape a man's entire existence.

What seems like a very personal journey for one man becomes an exploration of the soul for all mankind. James Buffin takes the audience from otherworldly disasters to places forever affected by them. He shows us sights that seem to be ripped from fairy tales, places thjames1.jpgat are frozen in time that still retain their beauty even after the ravages of nature. All of this comes together beautifully to weave a tale about how trauma can shape not just one life, but all life.

Under the Big Cloud was started in 2009 as three different projects. The first one was with the Chasing4Life  storm chase team in and a series of coincidences led to two trips to Samoa, shooting with survivors of a tsunami. James then travelled as a volunteer to help them tell their own stories. Indonesia was April-May this year. But it wasn't until James covered the Toronto International Film Festival a magazine earlier this year magazine that he realized all three projects belonged together.

We bring James to the radio show to share how he went from filmmaker to the subject of his own film and to answer the question everyone keeps asking: "What happened to the Chasing4Life movie?"

Thinking outside the box

January 23, 2012

black.jpg

We live in a dangerous world. And during a serious emergency, "first responders" -police, firefighters, paramedics- will be busy helping other people. That's why you need a disaster kit. To take care of your needs, and the needs of your loved ones, until help can arrive. We've chosen to visit with the folks from ReadyBox in this episode of the show because this is a company with insight into what you need to have in that disaster kit! Here at Chasing4Life we have believed for a long time you cannot simply buy a disaster kit but have to customize one for your needs.  ReadyBox is that great starter kit for the person-on-the-go, the family or the responder looking to start walking the walk and not just talking the talk when it comes to preparedness! Sometimes, knowing what to put INSIDE the box takes understanding what could be happening OUTSIDE the box...

Preserving the lives of the life preservers

January 30, 2012

police-funeral-11.jpgIt takes a special person to protect the lives and property of others. Sometimes that job can become a bit too much. Responders cannot do their job properly and safely if they don't take care of themselves and one way they can do this is by relying on the people at SafeCalNow.org. Safe Call Now was established BY responders FOR responders. Listen in as we talk with Founder Sean Riley, hear his story af_splashpage_01.jpgnd find out just how Safe Call Now is saving and preserving the lives of America's heroes.  This issue has been one that we have spoken a lot about on our radio show and we encourage response and law enforcements agencies around the country to listen in. This is not a call-in show... if you need help, please call SafeCallNow today at 206-459-3020.

Under The Big Cloud Part Two

February 6, 2012

45675_1481386487272_1612114680_1223205_4477711_n.jpg

A few weeks ago we heard from filmmaker James Buffin of Veritus Pictures. "Under The Big Cloud" is a film about trauma and disaster and the effect trauma has on the human life. In this episode we will visit once again with James to see how the making of the movie turned into the movie itself as James discovered more about himself than he ever could get on film.

The introduction song for Chasing4Life's "Stronger Community" Radio Show was recorded by Ted Fillhart.  Ted is a long-time friend and supporter of Chasing4Life, and we were over-joyed when Ted gave his permission to use his blues-rendition of "God Bless America".  We wanted to share some background of the song, so we asked Ted to share how he came to record the anthem...

ted.jpg"When my youngest daughter was 6 or 7 years old she enjoyed singing Patriotic songs. She was running around the house singing the traditional version of "God Bless America" and I thought that would be a great song to add to my concerts. At that time I was writing new songs to perform and eventually would record.  As I considered "God Bless America" I realized it wasn't just a song but actually a prayer and it was definitely a song I wanted to do.  However, I wasn't interested in recording the traditional version, so I started experimenting with different musical genres and found out that a Blues version I came up with really captured the feeling and emotion that I was looking for.  Before long I added my blues version of the song to my live concert sets and quickly found that people really enjoyed it and it eventually ended up on my CD that I recorded in Nashville.

"God Bless America" is an American patriotic song written by Irving Berlin in 1918 and revised by him in 1938, as sung by Kate Smith.  "God Bless America" takes the form of a prayer intro lyrics as we raise our voices, in a solemn prayer for God's blessing and peace for the nation.  In times of peril such as natural disasters, this song is a reminder that God is with us through good times and bad."
